Dwell Time

Definition

Dwell time is the duration between when a user clicks a search result and when they return to the search results page. It differs from bounce rate (which measures single-page sessions regardless of time) and time on page (which measures all visits, not just from search). While Google has never confirmed dwell time as a direct ranking factor, there's strong evidence that user engagement signals influence rankings. A long dwell time suggests the content satisfied the user's query, while a short dwell time ('pogo-sticking' back to results) suggests it didn't. To improve dwell time: match content to search intent, provide comprehensive answers, use engaging formatting (headings, lists, images, videos), ensure fast page load speed, write compelling introductions that hook readers, and use interactive elements like calculators, tools, or quizzes. Content depth and quality are the strongest predictors of good dwell time.
