Open Graph (OG Tags)

Definition

Open Graph (OG) is a protocol originally created by Facebook that allows web pages to control how they appear when shared on social media platforms. OG tags are HTML meta tags placed in the <head> section of your page. The essential OG tags are: og:title (the title shown in social shares), og:description (the description text), og:image (the preview image — recommended 1200x630px), og:url (the canonical URL), and og:type (content type, usually 'website' or 'article'). Additional tags include og:site_name, og:locale, and og:video. While OG tags don't directly affect SEO rankings, they significantly impact social sharing click-through rates, which can indirectly drive traffic and backlinks. Twitter uses its own twitter:card tags but falls back to OG tags if they're not set.
