Keyword Research

Definition

Keyword research is the foundation of any SEO strategy — it's the process of discovering what your target audience is searching for, how often they search for it, and how competitive those terms are. The process involves: identifying seed keywords relevant to your business, expanding them using tools and autocomplete suggestions, analyzing search volume and keyword difficulty, understanding search intent (informational, navigational, commercial, transactional), and grouping keywords into topic clusters. Good keyword research reveals content opportunities — topics where you can realistically rank and drive qualified traffic. Key metrics to evaluate include: monthly search volume, keyword difficulty (competition), cost-per-click (indicates commercial value), and SERP features (featured snippets, PAA boxes). Long-tail keywords (3+ words) typically have lower volume but higher conversion rates and less competition.
